Hero of the Day

Well i never thought it’d be like this.

All the stories tell of much more bliss.

Romantic goodbyes and long restless nights,

all surrounded by some epic fire fights.

They told me heroics and glory await.

They told me the experience would be great.

Pictures of smoke and bullets came to mind,

and I asked where do I sign?

They told me I’d be the hero of the day

A regular soldier of Freedom and the American way

a saint and sinner both one and the same

I agreed and signed away my name

My friends they came and they went,

funerals had become too frequent.

A mural of death was inscribed on my chest,

and all the fears started to grow and manifest.

Trauma and chaos soon became the norm.

From the fabric of reality we all became torn.

Lies and lies spilt from their mouths as the months began to pass,

less and less i trusted the all and powerful Brass.

Lies after lies they whispered while we all began to die.

Close the casket and carry on  like nothing has changed,

but in the end life seemed to be short changed.

Questions and thoughts of “why” were forming,

yet no one wanted to be helpful or informing.

They told me I’d be the hero of the day

A regular soldier of Freedom and the American way

A saint and sinner both one and the same

I agreed and signed away my life
